Upper Clyde Shipbuilders
About Upper Clyde Shipbuilders
Upper Clyde Shipbuilders (UCS) was a Scottish shipbuilding consortium formed in 1968 through the amalgamation of five major shipbuilders on the River Clyde. Created as a result of the Geddes Report and the Shipbuilding Industry Act 1967, the company aimed for rationalization and horizontal integration of shipbuilding in the United Kingdom into large regional groups. The government held a minority stake and provided significant loans to facilitate economies of scale and compete in the market for large merchant vessels. Despite having a substantial order book and forecasted profits, UCS entered receivership in June 1971 due to a lack of further state support for "lame duck"" industries
